Private Instruction
The Suzuki Method: Violin or Guitar
Sponsored by Johnson Strings of Newton
"If children hear fine music from the day of their birth
and learn to play it, they develop sensitivity, discipline and endurance.
They get a beautiful heart."
--Shinichi Suzuki
Pakachoag's Suzuki Faculty and Offerings are Growing!
Teachers include: Jeremy Milligan, Guitar;
Amy Matherly (also Fiddle), Sheila Reid, and Audrey White, Violin
Suzuki Violin - Ages 3.5* and older
Suzuki Guitar - Ages 4* and older
* For children under the age of 5, we make the decision regarding readiness for lessons on a case-by-case basis based on a few simple questions, followed by a quick teacher assessment.
One or more years of Music Together classes can be highly valuable in preparing a child for private lessons.
Pakachoag Music School's Suzuki curriculum
consists of a weekly individual lesson (34 weeks annually- September to June)
and a weekly group class (32 weeks annually).
Individual Lessons
Private lessons include a choice of 30, 45 or 60
minutes. The length of the lesson is determined by
the teacher in consultation with parents, and is
based on the child's age, attention span, and skill
level. A Parent or another adult caregiver is asked to
be present at the lesson in order to learn with the
student, and take notes on what to practice.
Occasionally the adult will actively participate in
the lesson, in order to fully understand what the
student is learning.
Private Lesson day & time is arranged individually.
Group Classes
Suzuki students enroll in group classes* in addition to private lessons. Billing is based upon 34 private lessons annually and 32 group classes annually. Tuition for students enrolling mid-year will be pro-rated.
The group class component of the Suzuki method provides an
opportunity to experience the social aspects of
music, learn from peers, polish pieces for
performance and to review the repertoire. Group
classes meet once each week and serve as a
wonderful motivator for the children (and sometimes
parents too! ). Groups may occasionally be heard in Student Recitals.
Students are placed according to their playing level,
and not necessarily according to age. A student's group teacher may be different than their private teacher.
How Group Scheduling works: When possible, we will schedule you into a group that meets on the day of your lesson usually within one to 1 ½ hours of your private lesson time; however, please be aware that the class which is best matched to your child may fall on a different day than your lesson. If multiple options are available, we will consult with you in advance. Students are grouped according to similarity of level – not according to age. The group experience is an integral part of the Suzuki method. Because the group experience reinforces and deepens what is taking place in the private lesson, one should not expect that all students within a group will be exactly matched with regard to age or ability level. * In rare instances, if the school does not have an appropriate group class available at the time of enrollment, we will adjust tuition accordingly.
Saturday Suzuki & Fiddle Class
Saturday Suzuki & Fiddle is for Violin students in Suzuki Books Four and Five.
Students (both Pakachoag and non-Pakachoag) are invited to join teacher Amy
Matherly on Saturday afternoons from 12:00-1:00 for this class.
The focus of the first 30 minutes will be on works from the Suzuki
repertoire. During the second half of each class students will learn fiddle
tunes from various traditions including Scottish, Old Time, Irish and
Swedish. The group will perform at school recitals and out in the
community. This class offers the opportunity for students to play together,
develop ensemble skills, and perform as a group.
Classes starting in late September and January.
Tuition (15 weeks): $310
